Module Overview

Game Music Composition

The aim of the Game Music Composition course is to provide musicians and music producers with the knowledge and technical skills required to create music for an interactive game. Participants will discover the key elements of composing for an interactive media where the final score will only be determined when the game is played. Within games, the music must reflect the current state of play and change dynamically depending on how the player progresses.

Delivery Overview

The module will be delivered using a blended learning approach, with a combination of face-to-face and online delivery. The course will delivered in three 'blocks' - covering background on music in games, music composition/production and game music project respectively.

Block 1 - Background on Music in Games

The first block will include both face-to-face and online delivery. This block will cover induction, introduction to music in games, analysis of current game music compositions, game audio development process and game audio middleware. The online elements will be delivered on Wednesday evenings.

Delivery Dates: 31 October 2014 - 17 December 2014

Block 2 - Music Production and Music Composition

The second block will be intensive face-to-face delivery of music composition workshops and music production labs.

Delivery Dates: 21-23 January 2015

Block 3 - Game Music Project

The final block will be delivered using a blended approach, with optional face-to-face or online supervisor meetings to review students' progress. This will conclude with a final face-to-face assessment demo of all student compositions.
